Dental Hygiene, Therapy and Continuing Care
Dental Hygiene is an essential
aspect of good oral health care and can help prevent
disease and reduce the risk of tooth decay and tooth
loss. We place a lot of importance on hygiene, and we
employ three professional dental hygienists, Wendy
Sih, Kimberly Stevens and Aimee Graham.
Your hygienist is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease and the prevention of tooth decay. She will check the bone condition around the roots, take any necessary x-rays, pass on helpful tips and show you useful cleaning techniques.
The maintenance of good dental hygiene is one of the
most important elements to your overall health.
The Oral-General Health Connection
Did you know that your body’s response to Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease can seriously compromise your general health? Recent research has found a strong link between Periodontal Diseases (gum and jaw bone diseases) and many systemic (whole body) conditions, the most significant being the incidence of Heart Disease. Also under serious investigation are cancers, stroke, lung disease, pre-term babies and even Alzheimer’s!
We already know that many conditions are severely affected or made much worse by Periodontal diseases, especially Diabetes, Cancer treatments, inflammatory conditions and organ transplant health.
Oral cancers are on the increase, especially for young women, due to Periodontal Disease, increasing the retention of cancer-causing Human Papilloma Virus in the mouth, even in non-smokers.
Lifestyle choices such as smoking and tongue rings dramatically compromise oral health and therefore increase systemic health risks even further.
